Pasadena Winter Carnival - 2009

..."Take my hand and we're halfway there...

Carnival is half over.  Optimist?  Carnival has six days left.  :-)

Saturday was a great time to be outdoors and a great day to take a few snaps at the field where the wee ones and their parents were having barrels of fun.

The wee ones gave place to the not so wee ones and they raced and bounced and slid their away around the field.

There was more of the same on Sunday but I didn't get there.  I tried though. I've only been living in Pasadena for 30 years so I don't quite know my way around yet.  Sorry!   :-(

Things slow down just a little during the week, but there's still plenty to do, especially for those whose only exercise is from elbow to mouth. This may inspire some of us to get out to the Ski and Nature Park and do a little cross country skiing.

Last night we enjoyed the Fish Fry, thanks to Gerry Byrne and his faithful followers. Gerry's a nice guy.

It's all just about to start rolling.  Ambassadors have been chosen. The Patron has been chosen. I guess the first real event is the Carnival Breakfast on Friday morning.

A full gallery of this year's carnival pictures may be found HERE.

It's magic under here!

The denizens of Pasadena, after 51 weeks, emerge from Letenation, in their little red shirts, maroon and yellow scarves, and start eating for 10 days, building up reserves for the 51 weeks of ordinary fare that follow.

This is an annual happening, celebrated tonight with bombs bursting in air, replete with speeches and persons of note, filled with  hot chocolate and other sustaining goodies. Even the little ones realize the significance and appear in a hopeless attempt to emulate their adult models. They'll learn.

So, as everyone wanders around in lock-step from one repast to another, today, following the breakfast at the seniors club, they will eventually arrive at the opening ceremonies at 7:00 tonight, (Hot chocolate and Timbits) and then move inside to a slide show of previous Winter Carnivals and "buffet style refreshments and Music."  The buffet style music  should be good.  (There's a Seniors' Dance at the Columbus Club at 6:30.  They want to get us to bed early.)

Some will then head off to the Oasis Grill House for an evening of comedy with Paul Seaward.

Oh yeah, there's also a social night at the Ski Park tonight. And just to get you ready for tomorrow, there's a bake sale at the Seniors' Club (so you can buy stuff to eat between meals), and a soup and sandwich luncheon following.

Be steadfast citizens. Prepare yourselves well for the dull months of summer. Solidarity forever.

Royal Canadian Legion - Pasadena

On Thursday night, January 22nd, the newly formed branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Pasadena accepted 14 new members. The first new branch on the Legion in Newfoundland in many years, has seen its membership swell to approximately 50 members in just a month or so.

On Thursday night the Town of Pasadena presented the new branch with a town flag, and the locally crafted torch was added to the emblems of the legion.

For the time being the Legion Branch is being hosted at the Pasadena Rod and Gun Club, the present home of the Western Sno Riders Snowmobile Club.

You may see additional pictures of Legion events HERE.

Pasadena Ski and Nature Park

Feeding the multitudes

Volunteers worked on Friday night, arrived again in the wee hours of Saturday morning to prepare breakfast for the church groups of Pasadena.

From left to right:  Front Row -  Beans, Hard boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausages Second Row:  Faron Knott, Mac Turner, Bern Campbell, Colleen Harris - Missing from picture:  Toast

The new lodge, warm and cozy with its wood stove glowing, tables set with tablecloths, real cutlery (not silly plastic stuff), and decorated for Christmas, is a great venue for such events. The volunteers were members of the Ski Club working both to raise a few funds for the club and to provide some Christmas spirit to members of the community.

Breakfast was served, buffet style, beginning at 8:30 and 75 people were served lickety split. A community folk choir made up of musicians from the various churches Pasadena kitchens provided entertainment for a singsong after breakfast and after the reflections.
