Reunion

Jackman Family Reunion

At this point planning for the Jackman family reunion (descendants of Arthur and Anne Jackman) is very preliminary. It may or may not happen. On this page, I'll just try to keep you up to date on what's happening, tentative dates, those who've expressed interest, etc. If you e-mail me at:  art@artandcarol.ca I will copy your letter to this page unless you expressly ask me not to.  This page is not linked from our main page, but it links back to it. This page is not accessible unless you have been given the exact link. If you're going to give it to anyone else in the family, it must be exact:  www.artandcarol.ca/reunion.htm

So, all I can tell you now is that we're looking at the summer of 2005. Coincidentally this is also the summer of the 100th anniversary of the town of Grand Falls Windsor, so there will be plenty of events and activities to attend. All the dates, events, activities will be added to this page as they become available.

Update: March 14th, 2004

Here is a letter I sent out today:

Hi folks!

Here's an update.  The important part is in bold.

The Mount Peyton has been booked for our family meal, Sunday, July 24th.  We have several options for this meal.

If we presented you with all the options at this point, it would get terribly complicated and the votes would be so diluted that there would be no clear favourite. So, we'll going to make an "executive" decision and just offer you two options at this point, either a buffet or a served meal.

The "Grand Buffet" will offer you a choice of two salads, Carved Prime Rib and Yorkshire Pudding, an additional item (our choice - one of stuffed boneless chicken Breast with Orange Sauce, or Baked Salmon in a creamy crab sauce, or Cod Au Gratin), one of Roast Potato, Baked Potato, Baked Stuffed Potato, and a choice of various deserts (all very nice looking), and of course, tea or coffee.

The cost of the Grande Buffet is $24.99 per person, plus tax (15%) and gratuity (15%). That would be a total of $32.49 per person.

There is a children's menu available with basic fare:  Hamburger and fries, or nuggets and fries. $5.50 plus tax, plus gratuity.

OR

We could have a served meal. There are several choices of served meal (and my understanding is that we make ONE choice for everyone, that is, if we choose turkey, then everyone has turkey). The served meals vary in price from $24.75 (Prime Rid) to $19.99 for other meals including turkey, Chicken Breast, Pork Loin.

SO, we have to make an initial choice, EITHER the Buffet, OR the served meal.

At this point, that's all we're asking you to do, indicated whether you would prefer the buffet or the served meal.  Majority rules. Absolutely.

We need a response from you ASAP. We need to know your choice (Buffet or Served Meal), and the numbers who will be attending

Those of you who haven't booked accommodations yet, don't forget that Grand Falls Windsor will be extremely busy this summer because of many family reunions and the Centennial Celebrations. Book as soon as possible.

Uncle Art has kindly offered his cabin/grounds for a BBQ/Picnic on Monday. That will be extremely nice. In order to buy food for the BBQ/Picnic, we could either tack a few dollars on the fee for the meal, or just collect a few things when we all get together. We'd appreciate your suggestions on this.

Your job at the moment:  Get back to us with your choice of either the buffet or the served meal  Once you've done that, we'll give you a few additional choices.

Here is some additional news re planning.

1.    On Monday, July 25th, we're planning a get together at Uncle Art's cabin. There'll be more detail soon, but there'll be a BBQ at the very least, and hopefully some fun and games for both young and old. IF anyone has suggestions and would like to volunteer to run some of these events your help would certainly be appreciated.  Don't leave all the planning to us.  If you do, we'll miss some wonderful opportunities.
2.    How does a concert sound?  There are lots of those amongst us who could put together a concert, both serious entertainment and some fun I'm sure. We'll work on that. Anyone want to entertain?
3.    Suggested day trips such as the Salmon Interpretation Centre, Museums, etc.
4.    Sing songs/BBQs/breakfast and maybe more at the campgrounds where some of us will be staying.
5.    Hmmmmm.... I'm not sure about a dance. Maybe we can give that some more thought and possibly work it into the after dinner at the Mt. Peyton.
6.    Other suggestions?

We also need to firm up some numbers. We've got positive commitments for great scores of folks. On our next update, which should follow fairly quickly, we'll attempt to give you a list of those planning to attend.

I think what we'll have to do, once we get the type of meal finalized, is start getting the money in. The Mt. Peyton will be after us I'm sure. We'll add a small amount to the meal charge to cover the BBQ at Uncle Art's, and any other incidental expenses.  This will be refundable ONLY if the Mt. Peyton has any flexibility in their charges.

So, once again, get back to me with your choice of meal and the numbers attending.

Update: November 29th, 2004

bullet

Arthur Allan has just checked in, indicating his intentions to attend with at least some members of his family.

bullet

Arthur is hoping that his brother Joe will be able to attend also

So, it's shaping up to be a great party. Would anyone who intends to camp and needs a campsite please let me know ASAP if you want me to make reservations. There'll be a least a few of us camping at Sanger Memorial Park (down by the Exploits). I'm told the campsites are large, private, with complete hookups.

Updates:  November 25th, 2004

bullet

We have confirmed Sunday, July 24th as the date of the family meal.

bullet

Glenys has booked and confirmed the Mount Peyton for the meal. She's booked the main conference room which will be more than adequate for our maximum numbers.

bullet

Terry Maselli-Jackman has confirmed that he hopes all 13 of his family will attend.

bullet

I'm booking some campsites at Sanger Memorial Park (down by the Exploits for those who want to camp. That will include us and Terry (for a few days).

We hope to have more news about the tentative plans of some others very shortly.

I received an e-mail from Judy Carey. She was interested in knowing if there were plans for a reunion in the summer of 2005. This had been mentioned briefly on other occasions. I sent out a few e-mails. The ball is rolling. Lavina phoned me last night. Glenys and Laurie Ann have indicated their willingness work on this.

August 1, 2004

It seems there are a lot of plans already in place for visits and events during the summer of 2005, including weddings and planned camping trips. The problem now is going to be to work around commitments folks have already made, dovetail what's already planned with what we'd like to plan, and arrive at dates and events that will involve the largest numbers with the  inconvenience for the smallest numbers. So, how do we proceed from here? I think I'll solicit input from the largest number, ask for times/dates that are impossible, and then try to satisfy everyone. Can't be done of course, but we'll do our best.

2005 is the 100th anniversary of the Town of Grand Falls Windsor. Glenys tells me there are events planned for every month of the year, with the busiest months being July and August. Corresponding with these events will be annual Salmon Festival which next year will probably be the most elaborate yet. My personal inclination would be to avoid the Salmon Festival Weekend, but then again that would be a great attraction for any of the younger members of the family. The term "younger" is becoming more inclusive.  Accommodations may be hard to book next year, so we'd better get crackin'.

Let us not forget that next year Uncle Art will be celebrating his 90th birthday. I'm sure a lot of us will be there for that on October 31st. We'll make sure to honour that occasion at our reunion too if the dates don't coincide.

August 2, 2004

I've already received positive answers from Neala (our Neala), Angie, Frank and Jean-Luc Nossereau, and Diane and Neal Jackman. We also know that Lavina, Glenys, and Laurie Ann are on board with this.

August 3, 2004

Janet has checked in from the West Coast and indicated an interest for her entire family and has promised to contact the rest of her immediate family and all our relatives in B.C.

August 4, 2004

Australia has been heard from. Because Neala is considering a career on the LPGA tour, we may consider a golf tournament as part of the reunion. Get someone out to spray all those black flies along the Exploits. The Aussies are coming.

August 7, 2004

Arthur (Jackman - Neal and Diane's son), Renee, Haley and Madison said to just let them know and they'd hop in the truck.

August 13, 2004

Daphne (Jackman) Pearson has checked in indicating her family's interest and hoping that at least two of them will be able to attend.

August 23, 2004

Uncle Terry has indicated that there is considerable interest on the part of his family, so we're looking forward to possibly seeing them at the reunion.

Tentative Dates

We're going to advance the weekend of July 22rd, 2005 (Friday) to Monday, July 25th, 2005 as the dates for the events surrounding our family reunion. This is the weekend AFTER the Salmon Festival and will allow folks who wish to take in those events to come and stay for 10 or 11 days and take in both the Salmon Festival and the reunion. The FOLLOWING weekend there are events related to the 100th anniversary of Grand Falls - Windsor and folks may also want to come to the reunion and stay for 10 or 11 days (or more) and take in some of those events.  (I notice on the Centennial Celebration page that there is also a Murphy family reunion planned roughly the same time as ours, and a Hennessey family reunion planned for the following week.)

Our dates are not yet carved in stone, but the stone masons are on standby, and unless we hear from folks PDQ we'll set them to work.

Carol and I will probably be camping at Beothuck Park. (We have a couple of extra tents and could get more if anyone is interested.) If there are enough interested, we'll try to book a block of campsites. The Robin Hood Inn would be an appropriate place for folks who desire more civilized accommodations. It's appropriate because it was the family home and property. We're told by those folks that rooms are being booked fast because of the Centennial Events so you should make some tentative bookings. Family in Grand Falls has indicated they'll make every attempt to accommodate all venerable guests. (Now who fits into that category I wonder?)  On the way to/and/or from Grand Falls we'll be only too happy to take as many as we can here in our house in Pasadena. You may wish to stay with us for a while and visit the Great Northern Peninsula and the family's roots in Woody Point and Norris Point. Give Carol a chance to do her tour guide thing.

As soon as I get some phone numbers and some locations I'll put them here so you can start your bookings.

We just starting serious planning now, so hang in there. Suggestions are welcomed.

The Robin Hood Inn phone number:  709 489-5324 (It's a nice spot. Rooms are $79.00 single, $89.00 double at this time.)

"The property includes a 102-room full-service hotel, a 32-room motel that sits amongst the birches and 16
Housekeeping units. "

November 7, 2004

We're just back from our fall drive-about. We were on the road for six weeks, and we're only just getting our feet back under us.

Just a few quick updates.

Terry Maselli-Jackman (Uncle Art's Terry) hopes to around with his entire family. There could be as many as 13 of them. (Tentative at this point.)

Also, Uncle Terry will be using the American Thanksgiving gathering of his family to discuss their plans. He hopes (again, tentatively) that there will be a good representative there from VA.

Glenys contacted me a while ago with some suggestions for the reunion meal. I'm going to contact her later today to discuss some of those options.

With just the tentative plans folks have made to this date, we could have as many as 50 at the reunion, and there are still many not heard from.

Aunt Connie and Janet, Arthur and Lynn, Diane and Neal, Angela and Frank, Arthur and Carol, Laurie Ann, Lavina and Sharod, Uncle Terry and Aunt Doris and Neala and Doreen and Ginny, Terry and Linda, Uncle Arthur and Cathleen and Glenys, Connie and Delano and Neala and Jim (partial listing)
