Twenty Day Trip

Well, first of all, work up to this one. Go to FIVE, then TEN, then FIFTEEN, then add on some of the suggestions I'll make here.

I suppose the possibility exists that you'd just like to get a cabin or a campground somewhere and just stay a week or two. My suggestion for this would be Berry Hill Campground in Gros Morne. There's plenty to do in the area both for kids (if they're outdoors/nature lover types, and there's a good playground at Berry Hill with lots of other kids around) and adults. If you just want a cabin, there are plenty in Rocky Harbour.  We stayed at Cozy Corner Cabins in Rocky Harbour for one night. They're new, clean, and have all you'd need to set up house for a week or two.  I suspect most of them are like that. Gros Morne Cottages have a better location in that they face out on the Harbour. There's all horrible looking black pavement behind the cabins, but the front and the view from the front is quite nice. The campground at Shallow Bay is wonderful, and the beach is incredible, just don't plan on spending a lot of time in the water. The water DOES warm up in July and early August and sometimes can get quite warm if the conditions are good. There is also good accommodations and eating at the Shallow Bay  Motel and Cabins in Cow Head.

An exciting thing to do for adults would be to go to Bay D'Espoir (pronounced Bay Despair - there's irony for you). Once in Hermitage you could get the coastal boat to Francoise and get a bed and breakfast there. This would be absolutely wonderful if the weather cooperates, horrible if it doesn't.  It's something we've always wanted to do.  In any case, you may just want to make a quick round trip to Galtous and McCallum.  They are unique communities in that they're accessible only by boat, and they have no roads. Most of the homes are connected by boardwalk.

A trip to Burgeo would bring you to another wonderful community and some of the best beaches on the island (and maybe in Canada). There's a provincial campground and hiking trails on and around the beaches. We stayed in this campground for a couple of nights and spent the days hiking the beaches. Piqa had a great time.

And then there's the Burin Peninsula. Like Bay D'Espoir and Burgeo, you have to make the return trip by the same route, but it's something you wouldn't mind doing. The Burin Peninsula has many picturesque small communities, lots of accommodations, and several campgrounds. (Now, the term "lots of accommodations" is relative of course.)

The drives around all of the peninsulas are satisfying. The drive around the Bonavista Peninsula is a loop, as are those around Placentia Bay, St. Mary's Bay, Trinity Bay.  Take your time.  Enjoy the scenery, the people, and the history of the places you visit.
